Barbell Knurling, Bearings and Bushings Explained for Buyers

20KG Olympic Barbell shown in the Plus Fitness catalogue

Two barbells can weigh the same and still feel quite different in the hands. Knurling changes the grip, shaft dimensions influence handling, and the sleeve mechanism affects rotation. Choose those features around your intended lifting rather than assuming the bar with the most impressive specification is automatically the best.

Compatibility comes first. Once the bar works with the plates, rack and collars, the details determine how pleasant and practical it is to use.

Feel the knurl rather than judging the photograph

Knurling is the textured pattern on the gripping area. Its shape and aggressiveness can vary. A sharper pattern may feel secure for one use and unnecessarily uncomfortable for another, particularly during repeated contact or a different grip position.

Try the actual bar where possible. Assess the areas you will hold and whether a centre knurl is present. Do not choose solely by how dramatic the texture looks in a close-up photograph.

The REP straight-bar guide compares bars through characteristics including knurling and sleeve design. It is a useful example of matching features to a lifting purpose rather than treating all straight bars as identical.

Understand bearings and bushings

Sleeves rotate relative to the shaft through a mechanism that can use bushings, bearings or a combination. The appropriate feel depends on the bar's design and intended use. More bearings listed in an advert do not establish better construction or a better match for every lifter.

Ask what type of lifting the manufacturer specifies and how the sleeves should behave. Unusual binding, roughness or movement should be assessed rather than dismissed because a bar is inexpensive. Conversely, a demonstration of a sleeve spinning for a long time is not a complete quality test.

Check the shaft and the usable space

Shaft diameter influences how the bar feels in the hands. Overall length and the distance between sleeves matter for rack compatibility. Sleeve length determines how much plate thickness can fit while allowing the correct collars.

Use the existing barbell compatibility checklist before comparing cosmetic finishes. The plate guide explains why the planned load may occupy different amounts of sleeve space depending on plate construction.

FinishWhat care does this surface require?
Intended useWhich activities and limits does the manufacturer specify?

Buy a finish you can maintain

A coating can change appearance and care requirements. Ask which cleaning products and brushes are permitted. Do not apply a generic rust-removal method to an unfamiliar finish.

In humid rooms, regular care and appropriate storage matter. Our rust-prevention article explains why leaving cleaning residue or moisture on equipment can undermine an otherwise sensible purchase.

Keep bars in suitable storage rather than leaning them where they can fall or obstruct circulation. If the bar belongs in a shared gym, make its identity and intended use clear so it is not routinely moved into an unsuitable activity.

Make the shortlist specific

When asking about a Plus Fitness 20 kg barbell, request the exact shaft dimensions, sleeve construction, finish, permitted use and care instructions. If it is part of a new rack purchase, compare the complete arrangement with the Smith-machine and rack guide.

A good bar does not need to win every specification contest. It needs to fit its equipment, feel appropriate for its intended use and remain supportable through the years you plan to own it.
